The MASS community has developed a very effective proof-of-capacity (PoC) consensus protocol. When a node in a MASS network competes for the next block, it only needs to provide proof of valid capacity and cannot be skipped by the network. This proof is only related to the capacity provided by the node and can be verified by other nodes. The PoC consensus protocol has many advantages, such as unlicensed networks, 51% error tolerance, networks tend to be more towards decentralization, and support many examples of blockchain in parallel.
To implement the consensus protocol blockchain PoC system, community MASS has developed a system blockchain MASS NET first based PoC protocol, and will release a consensus machine MASS and cross-chain protocols MASS in the future. With the release of the MASS Net test network , the MASS community will also release the MASS Net white paper , and papers on technical and economic mechanisms. What is MASS?
MASS is a basic infrastructure layer that is able to provide consensus services in a number of public chains. To create a sustainable and robust Layer 0, the MASS consensus engine uses the MASS Proof-Capacity consensus protocol . Proof-of-Capacity forms layers of consensus that are unlicensed, fair, energy-efficient, safe and universal - ensuring the fundamental security of public chains. Proof of Capacity is designed to prevent the use of ASIC: participants only need to have access to storage space (such as hard drive space on a basic laptop).
MASS Net is the first public chain to use the MASS consensus engine (MASS is a store of outstanding value and the anchor value of the consensus engine MASS) . This network is without permission - with a level of security similar to the Nakamoto consensus protocol - the node uses storage capacity to run the consensus protocol. Networks tend to be more towards decentralization compared to bitcoin, because competition for blocks does not require the use of very expensive computing resources. MASS consensus machinedesigned to enable participants to get a fair share of the value created - anyone can mine with ordinary hardware because only a small amount of computing resources is needed. MASS is made by the MASS community . MASS Community is an open, non-profit online organization whose mission is to promote blockchain technology among the wider community, thereby improving people's lives and leading to a more just and more prosperous society.
The MASS Community was launched in 2017 by Dr. Ren Ling. We continue to advance our development through ongoing online discussions and cooperation, as well as regular offline events. The MASS community welcomes all experts with backgrounds in computer science, social sciences, economics, finance, or entrepreneurship, and who have the same goals as us. We prefer members with genuine insights and strong collaboration skills. To ensure community members have adequate qualifications, new members must first be approved by at least half of the existing members. When the time is right, our work will be made open source, a step that will promote broader technological awareness and will help collaboration in the future.
Problem
In our view, the key point that needs to be overcome so that the blockchain can penetrate the main stream is not the data structure layer, contract layer, or application layer. Instead, it is the consensus layer that is Layer 0. The reason for this is very simple. All data structures, contracts, and blockchain applications differ from traditional centralized models in that they pass the consensus of distributed networks that do not require permission.
Without consensus, all blockchain-based actions (such as transactions) will be unfounded, as are contracts and blockchain-based applications. Simply put, if Layer 1 is the basis of the blockchain that guarantees security and decentralization, and Layer 2 is primarily about scalability and performance, then Layer 0 is consensus. Without a strong Layer 0, Layers 1 and 2 will be useless.
When the Bitcoin network was first launched, it was an extraordinary work of creativity that not only included the consensus of innovative and sophisticated Nakamoto, but also showed for the first time the potential of large-scale, open, and distributed networks without permission. However, we believe that the bitcoin network is being held back by a number of obvious shortcomings. The most critical of these deficiencies is that they cannot be separated from the consensus mechanism, namely, their unsustainable energy waste, injustice, and increasingly centralized mining. People often talk about lack of scalability or problems with the contract layer, but we don't think this is a critical issue. This is because these deficiencies have solutions or solutions that are established or look promising.
From the starting point of trying to solve the problems inherent in PoW, we created and implemented the Proof-of-Capacity consensus algorithm, and then used it as a basis for our ideal MASS Layer 0 consensus engine . What actually makes a good Layer 0 consensus mechanism? We develop an ideal characteristic framework and use this as a basis for our development. ● Safe:
Using the principle of time-memory trade-offs, the PoC protocol ensures dishonesty of evidence, and together with the use of verifiable random functions ensures that the MASS system has a Byzantine error tolerance of 51%. Furthermore, the fork detection penalty scheme protects the main chain from Nothing-at-Stake attacks that can separate the main chain.
● Fair:
The MASS PoC consensus protocol guarantees that the probability of making a node block only depends on the evidence of effective capacity provided by the node. In addition, proof of effective capacity is independent storage media, so all nodes that participate in the MASS network have the same marginal cost.
● Energy saving:
In the MASS PoC protocol , computational resources are only needed when initializing storage capacity, and when entering a consensus block, data storage phase capacity is only accessed at complexity O (1) at a time. Therefore, using the MASS PoC protocol for block consensus does not require continuous power input consumption. When the MASS system performs block consensus, the computational resources used can be ignored; small enough not to affect the normal use of the computer. When storage capacity does not participate in the MASS network , it can be reformatted and used for other uses.
● Universal:
During the consensus process, the node only needs to perform an access query at the initialized capacity and not perform any data operations in it. Therefore, the same storage space can provide capacity
